More work cleaning up the look of the blog. I've
added the
Google Map plugin
[?] that should be seen on the right-hand-side
if at the blog base URL (
http://www.silent9.com/blog/).
Update:
Various comments have come that the results are wrong....I can't say I
didn't warn you! The original data source comes from a cgi script at NetGeo who has not been actively maintaing the system for a while. From their site:
NOTE: NetGeo has not been actively maintained for several years, and
this will probably not change in the foreseeable future. As a
result, there are several known major issues affecting accuracy and
service availability. Please be warned that NetGeo may give wildly
incorrect results, especially for recently allocated or re-assigned IP
addresses.
So I am currently looking at other free alternatives, like hostip.info but there are alot of holes in their data, too. I haven't found a comprehensive free IP to location lookup yet...
A while back I saw Google had released the API for their Google Maps.
Shortly after that I discovered reams of places where people had done clever things with this information and the API like:
And many more things seen at http://googlemapsmania.blogspot.com/.
I decided I needed to make my own use of this beast, so I created a blog plugin[?] to display the referrer IP, using a rwhois NetGeo
lookup on a world map. It would be easy to cache it in a database so
the last X could be plotted, but I'll leave that for later...
