I've spent my share of online time playing various role playing games, or RPG's, ORPG's (online role playing games), MORPG's (multiplayer online roleplaying games), and even MMORG's (massively multiplayer online role playing games) but I have never experienced anything as odd as The Kingdom of Loathing (KOL to those in the know).
The premise is simple. Like most of these online adventure games, you select attributes, choose a character, select a name and jump in. Here is where things get a bit different.
Eli the Sauceror
Meet my character Eli. Eli is a Sauceror.
"Long engaged in an uneasy truce with the Pastamancers, the guild of Saucerors protects the secrets of the Ancient Brotherhood of Gravymakers. Their Mysticality is their most important attribute."
Yep. Everything is rather epicurean in nature. Most RPG's use that time honoured currency, gold. Not KOL. In KOL, the currency of the day is meat. Yep, Meat.
And the rest of the "weapons", "armour" and equipment are just as bizarre. Try the Gnollish Autoplunger
It can be used to quickly unclog toilets, or to lay a foul-smelling smack down on someone or something.
Now, I wish I had one of these in RL (that's Real Life for those not in the know of RPGSpeak). I often could use one of these to put the smack down on certian people
Even the "mosters" you battle are a little bit off. Following is a grab of a "battle":
Deadly Combat on The Outskirts of Cobb's Knob
And things get more unusual and more engrosing from there. So if you are looking for a unique time waster with pretty good gameplay, go sign up for an account at The Kingdom of Loathing.
