I came across this blog entry when I was looking up the beep software to play tones through my linux server speaker (connect disconnect, finished booting, rebooting, etc...), as it normally runs headless.
Now I drive a Ford Focus very much like this one, but mine is blue. And rather less smashed in. But it gives me an incredibly safe feeling that the occupants survived with nought but stiffness after getting rear-ended by a BIG HONKIN' RENTAL TRUCK.

Which shows how the seats are designed to angle inward on impact to protect the passengers a bit more, as well as absorbing additional kinetic energy.
Of course all these crumple zones mean that pretty every major bang-up leads to a write off...but better safe than dead anyday, I say!
